Apply to be a member of the Patient Engagement Collaborative (PEC)

The Patient Engagement Collaborative (PEC) – a joint endeavor of CTTI and FDA – brings together 16 diverse representatives from the patient community to meet with the FDA several times a year and discuss how to achieve more meaningful patient engagement in medical product development and other regulatory discussions.

Now through August 23, 2021, we are requesting applications from patient advocates interested in becoming members of the PEC. The PEC will accept up to eight new members for two-year terms starting in September 2021.

Please see below to learn more about the PEC and how to apply. When you are ready, please click here to submit your application via our online form.

What are the responsibilities of PEC members?

PEC members participate in working meetings two to four times per year, either in-person (in the Washington D.C. area) or virtually. Additional meetings may be organized as needed, and currently include monthly, one-hour teleconferences. Given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, meetings will be conducted virtually and may resume in-person when it is safe to do so.

What are the membership terms?

To help ensure continuity in its activities and organizational knowledge, the PEC maintains staggered membership terms. Eight of the 16 current members will complete a term and up to eight new members will be selected for two-year appointments beginning in September 2021. Members may serve up to two terms, with the possibility of extensions.

What are the selection criteria for new members?

Selected applicants will include:

  • Patients who have personal disease experience
  • Caregivers who support patients, such as a parent, child, partner, other family member, or friend, and who have personal disease experience through this caregiver role
  • Representatives from patient groups who, through their role in the patient group, have direct or indirect disease experience

Members will be selected based on:

  • Potential to meaningfully contribute to the activities of the PEC
  • Ability to represent and express the patient voice for his or her constituency
  • Ability to work in a constructive manner with involved stakeholders
  • Understanding of the clinical research enterprise

PEC members are required to be residents of the United States, and must be 18 years of age or older. Applications are encouraged from individuals of all racial, ethnic, and cultural groups, all sexual orientations and gender identities, and with and without disabilities.
